Preliminary Notice of the Exhibits.

Olympia, resuscitated from practical oblivion and ignominious failure by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, promises to return the compliment by having at least one annual exhibition, which, if not from the point of view of the amateur owner, is at least possessed of equal interest for the engineer as is either of the Society's annual motor shows. The Engineering and Machinery Exhibition, which was opened on Thursday last, the ryth instant, and which will remain available for inspection until the 19th proximo, inclusive, is a great advance upon last year's exhibition Under the same auspices, and outward evidence of its success is shown by the manner in which the stands have further encroached upon the space in the old annexe, where a lesser area is this year allotted to amusements and side shows, We propose, in this preliminary notice, to make brief reference to some of the principal stands, and we hope to be able, in succeeding issues, to deal more fully with the excellent machine-tools and other exhibits which are on view.

Machine and Other Tools.

The automatic and other tools for power drive are thoroughly representative, and the selection is less bewildering than many which have been collected within the walls of larger exhibitions, such as the memorable display, at Paris, in the year 19oo. The stands which immediately catch the eye include those of Messrs, H. W. Ward and Co., of Birmingham (Nos. 16 and 44); John Holroycl and Co., Ltd., of MiInrow, near Rochdale (Nos. 97 and too); Messrs. Selig, Sonnenthal and Co., of 85, Queen Victoria Street, E.C. (Nos. z18 and 129); Messrs. Schuchardt and Schutte, of 34, Victoria Street, S.W. (Nos. 120, 127 and 186); Drummond Brothers, Ltd., of Guildford (No. 12,3); Charles Churchill and Co., Ltd., of 9-15, Leonard Street, E.C. (Nos. 132, 140 and 146); Alfred Herbert, Ltd., of Coventry (Nos. 139 and 147); Messrs. C. W. Burton, Griffiths and Co., of Ludgate Square, E.C. (;'..â– Tos. 142 and 144); Sanderson Brothers and Newbould, Ltd., of Sheffield (Nos. 158 and 179); Messrs. Pfeil and Co., of r45-r=,7, St. John Street, E.G. (No. 205); and Ludw. Loewe and Co., Ltd., of Farringdon Road, F.C. (Nos. 299 and 302). The stand of Drummond Brothers, Ltd., is amongst the most attractive, and there is a typical range of this company's famous type of small-size lathes, for individual use in running-sheds and local repair-shops.

Heavy Gas Engines.

Large-power gas-engines are well represented by the examples in position on the stands of the National Gas Engine Co., Ltd., of Ashton-under-Lyne (Nos. 30 and 31), and Crossley Brothers Ltd., of Openshaw, and to, St. Bride Street, E.C. (No. 266), whilst suction-gas plants are, in addition, shown by Richard Hornsby and Sons, Ltd., of Grantham (No. 12), and Messrs. E. S. Hindley and Sons, of Bourton Dorset (Nos. 233 and 248). The last-named stand also contains excellent examples of the Hinclley, vertical, enclosed, high-speed steam engines, in which a very large trade is done for direct-coupled dynamo work.

For Grinding.

Grinding materials of all kinds can be examined on the stands of Markt and Co., Ltd., of 6, City Road, E.G. (Nos, 29a and 3m), The Vincit Co., Ltd., of 117b, Oueen Victoria Street, E.C. (No. 122), and the Carborundu:n Co., of 29, Clifton Street, E.C. (Nos. 756 and 182).

Ignition Supplies.

One of the most interesting ignition exhibits is upon the stands of Messrs. S. Wolf and Co., of 138, Southwark Street, S.E. (Nos. 57 and 76), and a splendid assortment of low-tension plugs, manufactured by this company, and suitable for all makes of vehicles, may be seen. We would ask special notice for the plug, manufactured without the use of soap-stone, for London motorbuses, and to the 2-volt coil, for which, as might be expected, there was great difficulty obtaining a suit'able trembler. Metals and Alloys.

Willans and Robinson, Ltd., of Rugby (Nos. 29 and 32), has on view a good collection of its well-known metals for various purposes, and no visitor to the show should omit a call at these stands, whilst steels of all grades are shown by Samuel Osborn and Co., Ltd., of Sheffield (Nos. 198 and 212). The latter stand has on it a piece of ferro-manganese which is believed to be part of the original material with which Mr. Robert E. Mushet made his experiments.

The Latest Roller Bearing.

An attractive exhibit of roller bearings is that shown by the Hyatt Roller Bearing Co., of 47, Victoria Street, S.W. (Nos. 55 and 78). A model of this bearing is employed, as an ingenious sign, above the stand. This bearing is fitted to vehicle No. 46 in the trials (Broom and Wade paraffin lorry, entered by T. C. Aveling and Co., Ltd.).

Hydraulic Gear.

One of the principal attractions is found on the stand of the Pittier Universal Rotary Machine Syndicate, of 81, High Holborn, W.C. (Nos, 196 and 214), where Mr. Thomas H. Parker, M.I.Mech.E., who is consulting engineer to the syndicate, will be prepared to explain the transmission to all who are interested. A 2o11.p. set, weighing about 24 cwt. complete, and a 4oh.p. set, weighing about 4 cwt. complete, are shown on the stand.

General.

Turning to the sundry exhibits, we may mention, provisionally, the metal name-plates of the Standard Metal Engraving Co., of 24, Holborn, E.C. (No. 267); the packing rings and joints of the Dexine Patent Packing and Rubber Co., Ltd., of Stratford, E. (Nos. 56 and 77); the various specialities of the Albany Engineering Co., of Ossory Road, S.E. (Nos. 58 and 75); the well-known Fastnut washer of Fastnut, Ltd., of 6, Aldennanbury, E.C. (Nos. 63 and 70); the graphitical lubricants of the Joseph Dixon Crucible Co., of 26, Victoria Street, S.W. (No. 104); and the die-finished castings shown by Aerators, Ltd., of Upper Edmonton, N_ (Nos. 135 and 151). Alldays and Onions Pneumatic Engineering Co., Ltd., of Birmingham, has a good exhibit on stand No. 260, and Price's Patent Candle Co., Ltd., of Battersea, shows its oils, greases and soaps at stand No. 263.
