Perhaps Brian Hayward's biggest task when he became managing director in 1976 was to establish credibility in a company that had regularly been losing many millions of pounds a year. He believes it has been achieved. As evidence he says there has been only one change in the management team since that date.
Men who have been doing the same job for 40 years have accepted drastic change, though some found it difficult. There are tussles with the NUR and TSSA but they are based on mutual respect.
At all events, the staff seem to be more loyal than customers, whose average "life,'' for various reasons, is only four years.
