THE London Transport Executive's costs will rise by about £1-km. a year on account of the wage increase of 8s. 6d. a week granted to drivers and conductors. The Transport and General Workers' Union referred the Executive's offer to 140 branches and it was overwhelmingly aCcepted last week.

NUFFIELD BUILDS COLD CHAMBER FOR ENGINE TESTS

THE Nuffield Organization has built an underground cold chamber at Oxford for experimental work with engines. Temperatures down to 108 decrees of frost. can, be obtained.

The temperature of the chamber is thermostatically controlled and there are double doors, each weighing 3;', cwt., which provide an air lock. Insulation is 4 ft. thick and' consists of brick, asphalt, cork and concrete. Specially designed outlets are installed to carry exhaust gases away.
