Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Leyland-based AlexandraMolyneux Haulage is expected to change hands at the end of this year in a £52m takeover bid for its parent which specialises in tug boat operations.

Directors of parent Alexandra Towing are encouraging its shareholders to accept the offer from rival ship towage and salvage firm Howard Smith (UK).

Hull-based Howard Smith (UK) says that it has no plans to change or sell Alexandra Molyneux Haulage, which operates 28 trucks from depots at Doncaster, Barnsley and Leyland.

However, it says it made the bid because of the tug business, which contributes £34.2m to the group's £40.3m turnover. "Our plan is to run the business as it is at the moment and see how it develops," says finance director John Rutherford.

AMH, which turns over £3.2m, has just won a five-year contract which will double its number of staff. The Z1m-a-year contract with ICI Acrylics will start next March and includes warehousing, final cutting and packaging and UK distribution.

AMH will take over the management of ICI Acrylic's Blackpool warehouse and will ask its 45 staff to join its workforce of more than 50. It is looking for two drivers for the distribution work to join two who have worked there since 1976.
