YODEL HAS CREATED a trunking division, Yodel Transport, as part of its restructure.

The parcels giant – which was created after the merger of HDNL and DHL last year – says the subsidiary will bring together drivers from the two businesses under one umbrella.

As revealed by CM, the parcel giant is axing up to 60 of its 120 depots and closing four of its eight national hubs (CM 28 April).

CM understands Yodel Transport is dedicated to hub and trunking services. MD Jamie Stephenson says: “The new standalone business enables us to optimise our operation and deliver eficiencies in design and execution.” The company will take delivery of 107 double-deck trailers with Don-Bur lifting decks from June, which will help it to save 7,200 miles per working day.

Yodel chief executive Jonathan Smith says the group is moving away from full-time drivers: “DHL domestic traditionally used local courier and service partners and employed drivers for its B2B and B2C network, while HDNL had ixed drivers for its core B2C market. However, since the merger, most customers are swaying towards the new lexible delivery option because these drivers offer more delivery options and a local level of communication.”
