Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Trailer 2005's Bryan !ands sets the scene on this year's guide.

The UK's trailer and bodybuilding industry has certainly had a tough year, what with over-capacity destabilising pricing policies and prof it margins, the ever-rising cost of raw materials and finished steel, and several big name losses not least the oncemighty Crane Fruehauf.

Two elements have recently surfaced; Fruehauf Tippers in Wordsworth Holdings' Grantham factory, and an un-related Benalu sales office in East Anglia.

But anyone visiting last month's CV Show or the Federation of Petroleum Suppliers exhibition in Telford must surely have recognised what high-value elements trailers really are whether it be the humble tipper or a highly complex chemical or food tanker, double-decked reefer or any of the various 'special types'.

Why, even the rugged skeletal now has a degree of sophistication some twin 20ft container carriers are able to divide, allowing one section to park a box at one depot while the other delivers elsewhere.

Trailers though are a quintessential factor in every high-volume, maximum payload or heavy haulage operation and a vital key to profitability. Superbly engineered, sleek and brightly marked, they're designed to carry maximum loads, securely, safely and economically.

They're also built in quite large numbers; on average the UK is worth between 15,000 and 17,000 units which is why, together with an anticipated cooling of demand across Europe this year, trailer building in Britain remains big business.

Here, in the first of Commercial Motor's Guide to Trailer Manufacturers and Suppliers, we've again joined forces with several long-standing partners Goodyear Dunlop, Groeneveld, Haldex, Jost and ArvinMeritor/ROR to present a round-up of who builds what and the types of equipment on offer.
