The recent moves announced by the R HA, which are designed to attract owner drivers to become members, leave a lot to be desired. They may be offering certain discounts through a bulk purchasing scheme, but they are still doing nothing about the exploiting of owner drivers by their members.

Someone else who is trying to lure the owner driver into his clutches is the haulier who is advertising in newspapers all over the country. He is offering certain discounts, but the operation can only be described as a large scale "rip off."

Such concerns jump on the "bandwagon" because they know there is money to be made by exploiting the owner driver.

However, if an owner driver has any business sense, he will see through their activities and ignore them completely.

The only road open to the owner driver is to join his local association which is affiliated to the British Association of Owner Drivers.

If there is not one near him, he should make every' effort to establish one in his area. This may entail some hard work, but the benefits which can be gathered in due course will be repayment for his efforts, plus prosperity and survival in the future.

Our association (the North Humberside Owner Drivers Association) is a fine example for others to follow. Details were given in the article "Owner drivers are banding together" by Stephen Geary (CM, March 17).

We have now been established for 18 months and our members are all in a good financial position, thanks to the association.

If we had not banded together, many of our members would have ceased, trading or would be bankrupt by now. This was because they were working for R HA member clearing houses or sub-contracting hauliers.

The owner drivers' trade association is the British Association of Owner Drivers, and they just cannot afford to be left outside it. GEORGE KELLY, Chairman, North Humberside ODA_
