• Extending the working day of a caravan transporter by carrying two drivers had resulted in breaches of the law regarding drivers' hours, Abergele magistrates were told last week.

The defendants, Mr S. J. Peake of Patmore, Towyn, Merionethshire, and his driver, Mr Michael Thomas, also of Towyn, changed their original pleas of not guilty one of guilty on 15 charges concernir hours offences. Six other charges we withdrawn.

Prosecuting for the North Western 1J Mr David Roberts said Mr Peake owned caravan transporter and was engaged in ti collection and delivery of caravans froi and to all parts of the UK. On lon journeys it had been his practice to tat Mr Thomas with him, one of them drivir outwards ancl the other on the retui journey. Riding in the vehicle in this mannl counted as working time and as a resu there were numerous occasions, includir journeys to Cheltenham, Hull, Birmingha] and back when the permitted hours we exceeded.

The offences came to light as the result a routine records check by traff examiners.

Mr J. Gregory, for the defendant pleaded in mitigation that the offences wei not deliberate and arose through ignorant of the requirements of the drivers' how regulations.

The magistrates fined Mr Peake a total ( £18, £2 on each of six charges of permittiri Thomas to work excessive hours, and o three charges of himself working excessit hours as an owner-driver. Thomas was fine a total of £6 — £1 on each of six charges ( exceeding permitted working hours. Eac man was ordered to pay costs of £12.51 The total of fines and costs was £49.
