Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• At last drivers in the LDoY eliminating rounds appear to have found a method of completing Test 1 reversing into the loading bay and gathering only 10 penalty points in the process. They are driving forward and reversing straight back to the start line, then driving forward again with the obstacle this time on their right-hand side; then they reverse into the bay. This was a method used at both Dunfermline and Ruislip last weekend and, while it drew protests from a number of competitors in Classes A and B, these were not upheld. At Torbay F /Sgt Luker's well-drilled teamsters from St Athan put up another impressive show, providing the day's lowest scorer RAF Regiment Cpl Hallsworth (100, Class C), while three other NC0s, Cpl O'Brien (Class G winner) and Cpls Gordon and Smooker went unpenalized through the Highway Code exam. The only woman driver, LACW Shackleton, from RAF Mount Batten, was one of four competitors who made perfect performances on the road route.

One of Conoco's tanker drivers, B. C. Smith (Class F) made the best score 130 at the Nottinghamshire round, held at Newark. In the run-off to decide the overall winner J. Tomlin (Class E winner with 200 points) came off best with an NCL Ford. Last year's Class C winner, E. Watson, repeated his performance with 14 fewer penalty points.

A new venue was used for the Northamptonshire eliminator in a disused lay-by near Hardwick Woods. The 1971 entry of 94 was reduced to 88 mainly because of the withdrawal of Service entries from the local TA camp.
