JUST 4% OF transport firms intend to take on staff in the first quarter of 2009, while 11% plan lay-offs, says the 01 Manpower Employment Outlook Survey. The average figure of -3% is 11% down on the same period last year. Simon Edwards, head of driving and logistics at Manpower, says the depressed retail market has made many employers more cautious but nonetheless, "the results are in line with historical trends, as traditionally hiring intentions for the first quarter of any year always take a dip".
