Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Haulage boss Henry Carroll is instructing his drivers to steer clear of motorway service areas (MSAs), claiming they are becoming increasingly hostile to trucks.

His order follows parking disputes at Moto's Ferrybridge site near junction 33 of the M62 near Wakefield and Welcome Break's Woodall site on the M-1 near Sheffield.

His company Lincolnshirebased Henrys Transport, had to pay £60 after a driver was unable to find a parking attendant at Ferrybridge before going to sleep. The next morning there was a parking ticket on his windscreen.

At Woodall, a driver was given a ticket after parking for 45 minutes on a coach park because there were no spaces available in the HGV park.

Although this ticket was subsequently withdrawn, Carroll says it shows an increasingly hostile and inflexible attitude towards trucks at MSAs.

"The incidents happened within a fortnight of each other," he says. "Drivers are very often having to park on slip roads on the way out of motorway service stations because they [MSA operators] have failed to predict the level of traffic in 2003. One gets the impression that they are not making drivers as welcome as they did."

However, Grahame Rose, head of development for the Moto's parking management company, says drivers can always pay for parking in the restaurant if there is no attendant available.

"There has been no hardening of enforcement or changes in our procedure at all."

Henry's Transport specialises in frozen food distribution and employs 10 drivers.
