• The haulage industry's training sector is set for a big shakeup this summer with the launch of a new body to oversee it.
At present, the Road Haulage and Distribution Training Council co-ordinates schemes for the industry, such as the Young Drivers Scheme and Modem Apprenticeships.
However, as of 17 July, its projects will be subsumed by a new organisation, Skills for Logistics. RHDTC chief executive lain Hetherington considers the launch marks a change in the government's perception of training for haulage.
"Publication of a new skills white paper on 9 July will herald an entirely new emphasis from the government—it is a move towards sectoral rather than local training provisions."
Hetherington adds that SFL will be backed by a 'powerful' board representing both traditional hauliers and large logistics firms.
At present, Hetherington and Andrew Callaghan—former chief executive at Suttons of St Helens—and three others are heading up the project.
