Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Ford motor company has been fined a total of £300,000 for breaching health and safety regulations following a fatal accident at its Southampton Transit van production plant.

Christopher Shute died at the Ford factory, Swathling, on 17 August 2000 when he fell into an emulsion paint overspray capture tank (EPOC) used to collect excess paint from spray booths on the Transit van production line.

The company pleaded guilty to two charges of failing to ensure the safety of employees by providing a safe system of work for those using EPOC at Winchester Crown Court last Monday (16 June.) In a statement Ford says it has "taken action to prevent a similar incident ever occurring again".

It adds that it "recognises that nothing is more important that workplace safety."

Ford emphasises that: The company has a proud record of excellent performance and continuous improvement in the safety level of its plants."
