DRAFT regulations covering the con

sanction and use of reversing lights, which are made legal by the Road Transport Lighting (Rear Lights) Bill, have been prepared by the Ministry of Transport. Representations on them must be made not later than July 15.

The draft regulations provide that no vehicle shall carry more than two reversing lights, and that the bulbs shall not exceed 24 watts. Diffusing glass or other material must be fitted to the lamp, which must be made and fitted in such a way that its beam is permanently deflected downwards and is incapable of dazzling anyone standing on the same horizontal plane as the vehicle more than 25 ft. from the light, and whose eye level is not less than 3 ft. 6 in. above that plane.

No reversing light shall show awhile light to the rear, except for the purpose of reversing.

Only two forms of operation will be permitted. One is automatically by the engagement of reverse gear and the other is by a switch provided exclusively for that purpose. If a switch is fitted, the vehicle must have a device readily visible to the driver at all times when he is sitting in his seat to indicate whether the reversing light is on.

Later, the Minister of Transport will circulate draft regulations dealing with rear reflectors, rear lamps and multipurpose lamps. Eventually, regulations made to deal with these matters, together with those on reversing lights, will be incorporated in new consolidated Lighting Regulations.
