Lorry Said to Run on a Fuel Described as Solid Petrol . .

WE were amused to see, recently, in a daily paper, a reference to a 5-ton lorry which was said to be running on solid petrol made from coal. The writer naively stated that this petrol, which is produced by distillation, looks like small pieces of burned coal. We believe, that the vehicle referred to is one operating on producer gas.

On a certain engine the head gasket blew. A new one was fitted and again failed. First the gasket maker was blamed, but examination revealed his product to be of sound construction. Then the fault was attributed to head design. In the end, however, the cause of the trouble was traced to nothing more than an accumulation of carbon which the fitter had neglected to scrape away from the face of the cylinder block.
