CHRISTOPHER ThorneycroftSmith is marketing sport with all the enthusiasm that he applies to his job as marketing director of DAF Trucks (GB) Ltd. He claims that, through advertising on barriers at football grounds, his company's name has been seen more often than Liverpool on Match of the Day.
Now it has become familiar to boxing fans through DAF Trucks championship night at Wembley, when the company sponsored two winners — Alan Minter, middleweight world champion, and Charlie Magri, European flyweight champion. Christopher pulls no punches.
The DAF Truck-Le Jeune PZ cycling team has been pedalling frantically in the Tour de France, and Barry Sheene, Britain's top racing motorcyclist, has been lending further gloss to his sponsor's name.
