BUSINESSES HIT BY the explosion at the Buncefield oil depot have gone cap in hand to Total in the hope that the oil giant will help them get hack on their feet, Buneefield resulted in some transport companies losing money for uninsured losses and others losing up to 20% of their business.

"There have been meetings with Total," she adds. "We'd like compensation from Total for some of the smaller companies.'" The depot is owned 60% by Total and 40% by US company Chevron. It is believed that the lire began at the Total area of the site when petrol vapour ignited.
Affected firms have been asked to fill in an economic impact survey so evidence can be presented to Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott at a meeting next week.
