EDDIE STOBART'S boss must decide whether to quit the firm's home county and relocate to Cheshire or find a base in Carlisle after a planning row scuppered plans for a Penrith head office.

Andrew Tinkler says he has been "unfairly treated" after the highways authority dragged its heels over the operator's plans to work out of a 16-acre site at the Eden Business Park (CM 22 December 2(X)5).

The final blow came when the highways authority demanded the company, and its sister company WA Developments, approach a bus company to discuss laying on a service to the site and to stage more traffic surveys.

Tinkler explains:"We've ditched it because it was dragging on and on. I've just decided I can't wait any longer. Raw material prices are £300,000 up on last year."

At a hoard meeting next week, Stobart directors will decide whether to move to Warrington or try to find somewhere in Carlisle. No one's going to get laid off," says Tinkler. -As far as we're concerned we have to relocate it's whether people are willing to travel there."

Al a recent Public Inquiry, Traffic Commissioner Geoffrey Simms reserved judgment on Eddie Stohart's Eastern Traffic Area licence (CM 19 January).

Tinkler says the company is prepared for a light if the licence is revoked: "We've given the evidence. It was a hit sketchy at times hut [Simms' had the chance to come hack and question it." christoplier.tindall@rbi.coaik
