I WAS SHOCKED and saddened to read that so many drivers have been killed at the wheel of their trucks (CM 15 December 2005).
Having worked night shifts on a regular basis, I've encountered some shocking sights on the roads of this country.
Operators are forcing drivers to adopt more irregular (flexible) shift patterns to accommodate customers' needs, giving scant regard to drivers' sleep patterns.
There appears to be little distinction between day and night shifts any more, playing havoc with drivers' body clocks. Combine this with unplanned delays at NDCs and RDCs around the UK and it's no wonder drivers fall asleep at the wheel.
These companies might be surprised to learn we have a life too, It's no wonder there's a driver shortage in the UK!
