TRANSPORT FOR LONDON (TfL) has revealed more details of its proposed Low Emission Zone (LEZ) for London.which is due to come into force in 2008.Thcy were revealed during a probe into the LEZ by the London Assembly Environment Committee.

From 2008,only trucksequipped with engines that =el. Euro-3 or above will be allowed into London without charge. This will be tight cried in 2010 to limit entry to Euro-4 vehicles or above.

If operators want to take older trucks into London they will he allowed to, provided they pay a daily charge of between f100 and £200. If they fail to pay the charge they will be liable for a fine of between £500 and £1,000.

TfL estimates that the cost of setting up and running the scheme is .£125-130m. which will swamp predicted revenues of i20-50m. It also believes that two-thirds of operators will be compliant by the 2008 deadline, although it has no figures for the 2010 deadline.

The FreightTransport Association is urging the government to look into a national low-emission standard, with an incentive for the early adoption of Euro-5 trucks.

Consultation on the scheme is due to start on 13 February.
