Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The compulsory introduction of digital tachographs has been set for May, sparking a last-minute rush for training. Guy Sheppard reports.

ALTHOUGH THE European Union has confirmed May as the month when digital tachographs must be fitted to new vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, the exact launch date has yet to be decided.

The Freight Transport Association says more than 1.000 of its members have signed up for a series of seminars this week (23-27 January) to hear about the implications of the changeover.

Steve Ellis. the Road Haulage Association's national head of training. says operators have been holding back on training until now because the timing of the digital tacho launch was so uncertain. "I have no doubt we'll get a lastminute rush," he adds."For smaller hauliers who aren't planning to renew their fleet for two to three years, it doesn't seem a big issue — hut what happens if you have to hire a vehicle and it has a digital tacho inside?"

The RHA is organising a series of 30 seminars around the country this year to cover the launch:They cost £83 for non-members.

Road transport training specialist RTITB is offering to train people in how to train others in the use of digital tachos.

Managing director Alex Nelson says: "We're starting this way so infrastructure is in place to train drivers locally. Big operators will want to provide their own training service rather than buy it in."

A two-day course costs £750 but Nelson says some trainees may require additional training, depending on their experience.

Telford. Shropshire-based RIT113 is also offering a half-day digittach training course for drivers. The courses are being run in partnership with Tachograph Analysis Consultants of Liverpool and cost £75.
