DESPITE initial popularity with New Yorkers, it seems likely that the American city will reject the double-deckers for its future fleet requirements. The Manhattan and Bronx Metropolitan Transit Authority has completed a three-year operational trial with eight Leyland Atlantean AN68s, but the buses have not met all of its requirements. The main problems appear to centre round the American-built air conditioning systems which have never been totally satisfactory in service. Mechanical problems have also been encountered, particularly with only eight d/ds in a fleet of over 4,000 single-deckers.
