January compared with the same month last year and by 17% over the past 12 months, according to SMMT figures.
Commercial vehicle production was also down last month, by 59.9% compared with a year ago. Of the 8,351 CVs produced in the UK in January, 76.7% were allocated for export, up 5% from December 2008.
SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt says: "Vehicle output continued to fall in line with expectations.'
