Steering Gear

AHYDRAULIC power-assisted steering mechanism suitable for passenger vehicles and medium-weight goods vehicles has been developed by Clayton pgwandre Co., Ltd., Titanic Works, Lincoln. The essential components comprise a gear-type pump, a control valve of the reaction type and double-acting power cylinder.

It is a development of the constantRow system as fitted to the Thornycroft Antar tractor. l he main difference is that in this System the control valve is of the reaction type, so that the " feel " at the steering wheel reflects the resistance to steering and is proportional to the assistance applied.

The cylindercan be employed in any position: in the steering linkage, but the malcers prefer to couple it to the drop arm of the steering box, as shown in the accompanying drawing. Operation of the control valve is similar to the method adopted with the Clayton Dewandre air-pressure-assisted steering.

• In this, bevel gears are interposed in the steering-column shaft, which cause a reversal in the direction of rotation. This reversal is corrected by using a worm gear in the steering box of opposite hand to that normally required.

Bevel -pinions mesh with the bevel gears, which arc splined to the column shaft and to the wormshaft of the steering box. The shaft caming the bevel pinions is extended at both ends, one end operating the reaction valves, whilst the other end acts against bias springs. The mechanism is arranged so that a non-assisted "feel " is experienced at the steering wheel When only minor corrections are being made during straight-ahead travel.

When the driver has to exert greater effort, as when turning, the preloading of the bias springs is overcome and the valve operates to give power assistance. Movement of the valve causes

the fluid. which is under pressure from the pump, to pass to the appropriate end of the power cylinderaccording to the direction in which the steering wheel is turned.

The steering control valve is integral with the steering column and is in the form of an extension above the steering gearbox;

It is understood that production has already commenced and that the steering box'. column and shaft are normally supplied by the Adamant Engineering Co.. Ltd., Dallow Road, Luton.
