THE ROAD HAULAGE Association has welcomed a statement from the Department of Energy that called for the introduction of a 38-ton weight limit for vehicles in Britain.

The statement (CM Aug 19) came in a report from the Advisory Council on Energy Conservation published last week.

An RHA spokesman told CM: "The move towards the use of 40-tonne vehicles would align Great Britain with Common Market maximum weight proposals." The public would realise the value of heavier vehicles when it realised that 100 38-ton vehicles would do the work of 122 32-ton lorries, the spokesman continued.

"There would be substantial savings in fuel and economies in goods vehicle operations which would make an important contribution in containing the prices of all goods," he added.
