• A new distribution contract for BRS Western has plunged the company into a row with the Transport and General Workers' Union over drivers' terms and conditions.
BRS took over the Birds Eye-Wall's distribution contract from Wail's Gloucester factory on April 1, and although around half of Wall's drivers took redundancy, 19 chose to stay.
That number has fallen to five, the TGWU says. This follows broken commitments that the drivers would remain on Wall's work, and a dramatic fall in wage levels and pension benefits, a TGWU Gloucester officer Joe Roberts claims.
He has also warned: "If BRS wants to go ahead with this kind of nonsense in Gloucester in the future, it will come up against further resistance."
