TDG men

• A Transport Development Group firm slipped up when a food firm's stock went missing. For Inter City Transport of Cumbernauld, near Glasgow, sacked five of its workers after an anonymous informer named them as being involved.

On April 15, an industrial tribunal in Glasgow ruled that the drivers had been unfairly dismissed and awarded them a total of nearly £9,500 in compensation against the firm.

The five who took their case to a tribunal after their sacking on September 10 last year, were David Haughey, Steven Graham, Ronald Brady, Joseph McMillan, and Gary Craney.

The tribunal heard that all the men were employed by Inter City as warehousemen, apart from McMillan who was a driver.

There had been stock shortages — including one of 582 cases — in goods being checked out and then delivered to Heinz in the early part of last year.

In August and September the men were named by an anonymous informer to management as being involved in removing stock. They denied this, were suspended, but despite further denials, were eventually sacked after investigations by the firm.

The tribunal held that there had been inadequate investigations by the firm.
