THE production of a newspaper is always an interesting subject to the general public. The whole story is a long one. One surprising feature is the great part played by transport. A long story could be evolved in dealing with the road transport portion of the subject alone. The transport of raw material in all parts of the world and, finally, to the paper factory, the distribution of paper in a hundred ways, in the case of big newspapers to the stores, thence to the printing works, to say nothing of the distribution of the actual newspapers all over the country, are matters of importance to all those directly concerned with newspaper Work.

The quantity of paper used in the productionoof a daily paper is enormous and calls for the institution of transport arrangements that are as near perfection•as can be obtained. In London we are accustomed to the huge quantities of newsprint required. It is not only here that newspaper production has increased, for it has also made big strides in the provinces. In some towns the output of daily papers is amazing, arid the demand for newsprint very heavy.

In Manchester, for instance, a fleet of motors does nothing else but haul paper from the stores to the printing works. Take, for example, one of the houses—Allied Newspapers, Ltd. There are employed here six 4-ton Leyland lorries doing nothing but transport paper, every working day of the week, from the stores, 11. miles away, to the printing offices. Each lorry mostly carries a load up to its rated capacity, so that one journey for the •six lorries 'means the carriage of 10 tons of paper. The work is continuous, and before one vehicle has unloaded there is another— and sometimes two—waiting to take the place of the one returning to the store for anOther load. The paper is used for printing the Daily Dispatch, the Evening Chronicle, Sunday Chronicle, Athletic News and other journals,
