C. DaMes Becomes Lorry Driver of the Year : Pease Transport Man Second.' A. E. Haywood Spoils His

Chance

ONE of 29 previous finalists out of a field of 109 entrants in the Lorry Driver of the Year Competition, C. Daines (Fred Myers, Ltd., Windsor), who drove an Austin platform truck, gained the title, Lorry Driver of the Year, at Bramcote, last Sunday, in the final runoff. This was made in three Austin 7-tanners supplied by Bridge Clock Motors. Daines had a clear lead of 19 penalty points over the second man. R. Thorpe (Pease Transport, Ltd., Watford Cross), in an articulated Bedford.

Thome was only 4.5 points ahead of the third man, D. Kinver (Symons Cornall, Ltd., Plymouth), in a Leyland. Daines, whose performance was consistently dashing, was also champion in Class C with the lowest penalty marks of the day-84.5.

The tests were practical and No. 4, in particular, was more difficult than the diagram makes it appear, especially for the Queen Mary vehicles. During the class championship, M. Murfin (Adams (Wholesale) Dairies, Ltd., Leek), in a Bedford, put up the best performance in test "1 with only 20 penalty points.

L. Larkins (H. Garon, Lid., Southend-on-Sea), in an Austin, and B. C. Clarke (S.P.D., Ltd., Exeter), who gained the Class D championship in a Bedford, tied

for the hest show in test 2 with 15.5 points each.

A. E. Haywood, an owner-driver, of Birmingham, in a Commer—Class A champion—had the smallest penalty (13) in test 3. K. Cottingham (Stanley Works (G.B.), Ltd., Sheffield), a previous finalist, incurred the lowest penalty (15) in test 4. He drove a Cornmer.

Haywood, who was Class A champion also last year, drove brilliantly last Sunday and won his class with the loss of only 87 points, which put him second to Daines in the class championship placings.

In the final run-off he sailed through tests 1 and 3 with the lowest penalties (30 and 22, respectively), but wrecked his chance of becoming Lorry Driver of the Year by incurring 137.5 points in test 4.

Daines scored the lowest marks (22.5) in that test. Kinver was best in test 2 (21.5 points).

Driving by all competitors was excellent, as the Earl of Gosford, Government spokesman on transport in the House of Lords, acknowledged in presenting the prizes. Nevertheless, there were big differences between the lowest and highest penalties in some classes.

In the class championship, penalties in Class A ranged from 87 to 258; in Class B from 136 to 376; in Class D from 104.5 to 220.5; in Class E from 106 to 290; in Class F(I) from 177 to 631, and in Class G from 190.5 to 506.5.

I. C. Martindale (Pease Transport, Ltd., Liverpool), in a resplendent Guy Warrior, was applauded all round the course, but with 102.5 points he came second to Daines in Class C. His marking

however, lower than that of any ; champion except DaMes and wood, and it was unfortunate that ould not take part in the final run nother man who deserves special tion is W. C. Ward (Arthur Hughes Sons, Ltd., Liverpool), in an articu1 Bedford, who missed the F(2) class npionship. by only half a mark.

mong those who were applauded by arge crowd of spectators, hut did not c in the first three places in their es, were W. Warner (Express Dairy Ltd., B.M.C.), H. Manning (Pease ;sport, Ltd., Foden tanker)—an old 1 in the competition—W. J. King se Transport, Ltd., Commer), T. aing (Shell-Mex and B.P., Ltd., imell tanker) and G. Bailey (Adams olesale) Dairies, Ltd., A.E.C.).

Accurate Judgment ost of the competitors judged the hs of their vehicles with great racy, although they had to do so t an oblique position. Indeed. R. M. ttt (James Stone and Son, Ltd.) had ight the matter to such a fine art that Worris became jammed between the iers.

. R. Meech. an owner-driver, who third in Class B, and at the advanced of 45 was the oldest winner of The mercial Motor Diploma of Merit, [d have won his class if he had not ved his Austin to run backwards on third movement in the kerbside log test and to strike the rear barrier. failure to note that he was on a slight ard slope cost him 20 points and two :s. His position at the kerb was good in the other three tests he was outling.

ase Transport. Ltd., had the biggest with nine entries, one of whom was [ss champion and was placed second ie final run-off, and another took id place in his class. S.P.D., Ltd., seven entries, also produced a class ipion and a second man. British Services and Shell-Mex and B.F., each had five entries. B.R.S. pro d a class champion, who was also best diesel driver. Shell-Mex and had no successes, but their drivers consistently good.

The team prize was not awarded this year, because of a complaint about the method of calculating the results.

A gratifying feature of the contest was the large number of directors of companies who attended to encourage their drivers. There were one or two delays during the day, but generally the organization was good and the final results were produced with the utmost expedition.
