QHEFFIELD magistrates heard a long 0---) legal argument last week when Mullan Brothers, Ltd., Thompson Street, Whittington Moor, Chesterfield, pleaded not guilty to using an overloaded lorry, which was carrying a heavy mechanical digger.

The defending solicitor claimed that it was a wrong charge and the prosecution admitted that it would have been easier to summon the haulage company for having only two attendants on the lorry instead of three. But, after great thought, they had decided there was no such offence in law.

The magistrates finally concluded that the police charge was correct and the company were fined £5. The driver, Douglas Newby Robinson, Beehive Yard, Brampton, was fined £2.

NEW VESSEL FOR I.o.W. FERRY QPECIALLY designed to provide more L., vehicle accommodation and handle the wide range of traffic passing between the Isle of Wight and the mainland, a new motor vessel, the "Freshwater," came into service on Monday on the Lymington-Yarmouth route. Crawford, general manager of South Shields Transport Department, has stated that although either trolleybuses or motorbuses could be profitable, trolleybuses were at a disadvantage in the provision of elastic and expanding services.

Trolleybuses were first used in South Shields in 1936, and the department now has 56 as well as 43 motorbuses.

A FINE of £15 was imposed upon the

Regentone Radio Co., Ltd., Sheffield, at Sheffield last week for causing one of their vans to emit a large amount of black smoke. The driver, who admitted driving the vehicle concerned, was given an absolute discharge. The magistrates learned later that he had been dismissed because of the incident.
