Daimler has finally taken the wraps off its new heavy-duty engine which is set to power

the Adios from 2010.

Steve Sturgess reports.

DAIMLER SUBSIDIARY Detroit Diesel has launched the group's Heavy Duty Engine Platform (HDEP) that will ultimately replace the Mercedes-Benz heavyduty V6 and V8 engines in Europe.

It will also supersede the Series 60 and ME3E 4000 engines in the US and Fuse truck engines in Asia.

The DD15 launch model has a capacity of 14.8 litres with power ratings between 455 and 560hp. Following a five-year, $1.5bn (11.05bn) investment, the straightsix motor is claimed to be 5% more economical than the outgoing Series 60 engine. It features a two stage common-rail fuel injection and turbo-compound system that contributes up to 50hp to the engine power by using waste heat in the exhaust stream.

Designed from scratch, the DD15 incorporates some of the technologies necessary to meet future global emissions requirements: the 2010 EPA standards in America, and Euro-6 in Europe (which will come into force in 2012).

It features cooled EGR for NOx reduction and achieves the back pressure needed to force exhaust gases into the inlet stream by using the additional back-pressure from the exhaust-driven turbo. Particulate matter emissions are controlled using diesel particulate filters.

While the 14.8-litre engine is aimed predominantly at the European market, there will be a 15.6litre for the US, followed by a 12.8-litre version that is expected to replace the 4000-series engine. The line-up will eventually be completed with a 10.6-litre lump. The engines are designed to be easy to service.

In the US oil and filter changes are at 50,000 miles; aiding technicians and workshop clean-up, all filter housings are top-loading and are serviced above the frame. Many of the subsystems on the engines are already in use on the Series 60.
