Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Tram not Outmoded I HAVE just read the article on the Thames 36-ft. coach I in your issue of October 4. It disappointed me that it was found necessary to contrast "The sleek lines of the coach ..." with the lines of the Brussels town tram in the caption to the photograph on page 83.

This smacks of the typical British attitude that the tram is an outmoded form of public transport. The tram illustrated in your photograph is one of the oldest type now running in Brussels and, I would venture to add, gives a standard of ride far superior to any motorbus at present operating in this country. The more modern trams are even better and also have two attributes of topical interest; that is complete lack of obnoxious fumes and an almost unbelievable lack of noise. The sleek lines of the modern Brussels tram (and most other modern Continental trams) contrast strongly with those of the average British service bus.

Praise or Criticism?

J EGARDING your news item headed "Excursions " Demand Down" on page 52 of last week's issue of 1136 The Commercial Motor 1 should be pleased if you would point out to your readers that the whole of the paragraph from which you quoted at the beginning of the item.was in fact praising our drivers', whereas the portion printed appears to criticize them. The whole paragraph read as follows:- "On the whole drivers' have worked well this season but there have been one or two who have been some times quite irresponsible in their failure to maintain their loyalty to the company, But I do not wish the majority who carry out their work regularly without supervision and without complaint to feel that the company does not appreciate their work—we do and we are sure that their passengers do also."

I would not like the industry to have the impression that our drivers do not serve the company well. Many have been with us for very many Years and have helped in the growth of the company.

'The paragraph as printed originally was, we think, reasonably balanced. and was published as received from a correspondent. We are, however, happy to print the expanded version.---ED.]
