Redundant drivers are set to share in a E look pay day Guy Sheppard reports.
FORMER EMPLOYEES at failed distribution company Allen MunroTransport are to receive an estimated 1100,000 in compensation because their union was not consulted about their redundancies. The United Road Transport Union says individuals who had completed at least five years service should get roughly £1 ,500.
The compensation, known as a protective award, is being paid by the government because Lancashire-based Munro did not have sufficient assets to cover it.
Administrators took control of the company in January, 2003 and wound it up two months later.
Brian Hart. URTU's North-West regional officer, says 71 members at Munro's sites in Skelmersdale and Glasgow are eligible for the pay ments: "They are delighted. Our application was originally made in March, 2003. It only got to tribunal in July of this year because there were certain legal hurdles that had to be got over."
He adds that protective awards are rare because most employers are aware that they are liable if they fail to consult recognised unions about redundancies.
