QUGGESTIONS that Ribble Motor 1-.) Services, Ltd., and the State-owned umberland Motor Services, Ltd., were milled in waging a "cold war " against private operators at Keswick were made at a recent sitting of the Northern Licensing Authority. The two undertakings applied for sanction to operate mother II tours from Keswick. The application was opposed by Mr. J. H. Fletcher, Lake Hotel Coaches, Ltd., and Messrs. Pape's and Weightman's.

Mr. J. L. R. Croft, for the applicants, said that Keswick operators were trying to conduct a closed shop. He pointed put that the proposed tours were over !xisting stage-carriage routes operated by the companies, and were intended to meet the needs of people wanting a Jay's outing for whom the stage-carriage times were not suitable.

Mr. R. G. Hunter, for Messrs. Pape's Ind Weightman's, said that the Cumaerland and Ribble concerns, which previously were "at each other's throats," were now joined in a "cold war" against local operators, The Licensing Authority granted Licences for four tours to Lorton, Cockermouth, Troutbeck and Aira Force.

SCOTS COMPLAIN OF SLOWER SERVICE

rOMPLAINTS about British Road L/Services were reported at the annual meeting in Edinburgh of the central :ommittee of Scottish Chambers of Commerce. The view was taken that t was imperative that road transport eetween Scotland and England should ae speedy, regular and efficient.

In the days of private haulage, delivery in London within 48 hours

could be .relied on, but reports, principally from the east of Scotland submitted at the meeting, indicated that frequently it now took seven days. Dumfries Chamber complained that goods from its area for London frequently went via Glasgow. Evidence is being gathered with a view to making further representations.

Strong representations are to be made to the Association of British Chambers of Commerce on the subject of insurance of goods sent by road. It was stated that B.R.S. accepted insurance coverages for only £400 per ton, whilst formerly it was £12,000 per claim. Because of the increase in the price of cloth, the South of Scotland Chamber considered that the present coverage was inadequate.

Kirkcaldy Chamber pointed out that B.R.S. did not accept responsibility for damage by fire.
