Parcels Traffic
DARCELS traffic of five of the largest I Liverpool stores is now pooled, delivery being effected by a fleet of 30 vans under a single management. Vehicles in this fteet have been drawn from the follewing concerns:—Bon Marche, Ltd., Blackleys Stores, Ltd., T. Hughes and Co., Ltd., Lewis's, Ltd., and Owen Owen, Ltd. The pool began to function on May 18.
Sir William Chamberlain, NorthWestern Regional Transport Commissioner, sent a letter to Col. A. Jerrett, chairman of the Liverpool Stores Transport Committee of Management, commending the success of the efforts to bring together five of the largest departmental stores in Liverpool for the purpose of rationalizing the carriage of their various commodities.
It is expected that the new organization will handle up to 20,009 parcels per week. Each store has deposited a sum of money with the pool, proportionate to its traffic, and this will he used to meet the first month's expenses. Deliveries will be charged out to the individual stores and so there will be a regular income enabling the initial deposit to be regarded as something like working capital.
Furniture and heavy goods will not come within the pooling arrangements. Shuttle services are maintained between the individual stores and a central depot where the loads are arranged and the vehicles are garaged and maintained.
