THE drawing competitions, arranged annually by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders in conjunction with the Coachmakers' Company and the Institute of British Carriage and Automobile Manufacturers, included an open competition for a working drawing of a double-deck trolleybus body. The drawings have been on view at the Polytechnic, Regent Street, London, W.1, since Monday last, and the exhibition closes to-morrow, May 26.

The first prize of £20 and a silver medal was awarded to Mr. R. A. Jones, of Chertsey, Surrey, for his design of a 54-seater on a Gloster T.D.D.-type chassis. The body has a central entrance with sliding doors having Peters vacuum operated equipment and Beclawat mountings.

Access to the upper deck is by means of a dual staircase. The outline is well balanced, with a similar slope back and front from roof to chassis. The is46 details given include a wiring diagram and particulars of the lighting system. The trolley gear is the BrecknellWillis type.

The second prize of £10 and a bronze medal was won by Mr. C. J. Fleming, of Woking, Surrey, for a 56-seater designed for an A.E.C. Q-type chassis. The Metropolitan -Carnmell-Weyrnann all-metal system of construction is adopted.

A central entrance with vacuumoperated doors leads to a staircase sloping to the rear. The last two rows of seats in the lower saloon are on raisedplatforms. The half-drop windows are of the Beclawat Typhoon pattern. The driver's seat is mounted on Leveroll fittings. Attached to the drawing is a detailed schedule of the weight of each part of the body, which weighs as a whole 2 tons 14 cwt. 1 qr. 8 lb.

Mr. R. H. Cutter, of Kensal Rise, London, who gained the third prize of £5 and a bronze medal, also selected an A.E.C. Q-type chassis as the basis for his design. This body is of all-metal construction, with the entrance and staircase at the front. There is Dunlapin° seating for 31 passengers in the lower saloon and 33 in the upper one. Both saloons have rear hinged-window emergency exits.

The exhibition includes a display of practical work of all branches of bodybuilding entered for the handicraft competitions, it consists chiefly of work done by the students of the Regent Street Polytechnic.
