SOUTHEND CONFERENCE

THE 24th Annual Congress of The Tramways, Light Rail' ways and Transport Association opened at Southendon-Sea, on Wednesday, with an informal reception at the Palace Hotel by the chairman of the council, Col. Sydney E. Smith, C.B.E.

Thursday was occupied by the official reception by the Mayor, Mr. Councillor H. E. Frith, and the 37th annual general meeting, at the close of which the first paper, on a subject that is unquestionably of vital technical importance, was read. In the afternoon the delegates and guests took coaches to Chelmsford to visit the works of the Hoffmann Manufacturing Co., Ltd.—a visit of particular interest in view of the instructive paper which had been read during the morning.

Thursday night saw the annual dinner, after which dancing occupied the rest of the evening.

Two papers were prepared for to-day's programme, but we deal only with that dealing with Southend's triple'system of transport.
