rr HE opening of the final section of the North Cir cular Road will create a dangerous junction at the point where it joins Hanger Lane. Motorists proceeding southwards from Sudbury, in approaching this point, round a bend whicn prevents them from being been by drivers emerging from the new road, until they are almost upon the junction. Furthermore, the majority of the former travel fast to make the ascent of Hanger Hill from the north.

PASSENGER-TRANSPORT operators in the Southern States of America are from at least one point of view, in a more fortunate position than are their colleagues in this country, for an agreement on fares has been reached with 11 of the 12 railway companies. If the outstanding company can be brought into line, there will be no more undercutting of coach fares on the part of the railways. For journeys up to 175 miles the fares are proposed to be equal on road and rail, but over longer distances the coach fares will be lower than the railway charges.

THIS news is particularly interesting in view of the latest fare-cutting activities of the railways, as the result of which it is possible to spend an evening in Southend-on7Sea or Brighton for a return fare from London of 2s. or 4s. respectively. How can coach operators hope to combat this competition? An agreement with the railways concerning fares is one of the most pressing needs of the coaching industry ; until it is achieved there can be little co-ordination. COMMERCTAL VEHICLE manufacturers in 'L0 France are very concerned about certain new legislation which is being prepared on the lines of our Road and Rail Traffic Act, and by which existing users will be licensed and the admittance of newcomers into the operating side of the business stringently curtailed.

RECENTLY we gave an exclusive description of the "Arran Dieselet chassis. We are informed that on short-distance journeys it averages 21 m.p.g. with 3-ton loads, and on longer distances 27 m.p.g.

THE Institute of Opthalmic Opticians has recently published an interesting report on refraction and migraine, which points out that migrainous scotoma may constitute a danger to the public as well as to the person affected. An afflicted driver, for instance, without realizing the significance of the attack, may easily run down a pedestrian or cyclist without seeing him. The scotoma might even be extensive enough to cause the oversight of another vehicle and result in a collision. It is quite possible for a person when reading to see only half a word at a time, or, of two objects close together, only one might be

seen. Proper optical treatment may reduce the trouble or effect a cure.
