The Volvo tanker, bearing the livery Mac Fuels, was stopped at 10:00hrs on sus The Royal Ulster Constabulary says it has not yet been able to establish if fuel smuggling was involved, since the tanker "went out of our jurisdiction". Gardai later found the truck dumped a mile south of the border near Castleblayney.
A spokesman says: "It is being preserved for technical examination. The driver is still missing, but we are looking for a known individual."
He adds that the tanker was empty when it was found, "so the story about fuel smuggling may not be valid".
The disparity between fuel prices has led to rapid growth in organised smuggling operations. And large numbers of operators are already driving long distances to legally fill their tanks in the South before returning to work in the North.
