operated by the North Western Road Car Co., Ltd., are to be increased all round for the first time in the company's life. Permission for the changes has been granted by the North-Western Licensing Authority. Commenting on the trade union's claim for higher pay and modified holiday conditions, Mr. H. G. R. Lambert, general manager, said that if the union-application were granted, either in whole or in part, it would be necessary for the company to lodge a further application for higher fares.

The present application permits the addition, with certain exceptions, of Id. to single fares between ld. and 51d., of Id. to those between 6d. and Ild, and additions of 2d. to 5d. to single fares between is, and 3s. lid. Return fares go up by amounts ranging from Id. to 7d. Odd Id. units will be eliminated.

Merthyr Drops Workmen's Fares Granting Merthyr Corporation permission to abolish workmen's concession tickets and to replace .them by a 1 Id. minimum fare, the South Wales Licensing Authority, Mr. H. J. Thom, said: " The corporation agree, I think: with what the Licensing Authority said at the last application—that there was no logic in the basis of the concessions previously offered."

There were no objectors to the application. It was stated at the hearing.that operating.costs had -risen by £38,166 in the past year and it was 'estimated that a deficit of £22.683 would be incurred

this year and £48,881 next year if fares • were not increased.

A new scale of charges has been authorized by the East Midland Licensing Authority to East Midland Motor Services, Ltd., following an application • lodged in February.Permission to withdraw season tickets, one of the points in the concern's application, has been withheld, but a new scale of season tickets has been authorized. No change was proposed in single fares, but returns are :increased by ld. and 243. The basis for the calculation of workmen's return fares has been altered on the routes affec‘ed in the 36 concerned in the application.

I.o.M. Feels the Pinch All-round increases ranging from 1.d. to 3d. are proposed on services operated by Isle of Man Road Services, Ltd.

Luton Corporation and United Counties Omnibus Co., Ltd., have now applied for permission to vary charges on 34 services. •

An application to increase by 4c1. all existing adult single fares of 8d. or, under, to create new stages on some routes and to retain other stages so as PI maintain a nd. minimum fare, and to add Id. and 2d. to single fares over 81d. and all return fares, has been made by Rotherham Corporation.

The abolition of return tickets and a reduction in the frequency of certain weekly and Sunday services is proposed by Darlington Transport Committee. A loss of 15,000 is estimated for the current year on present charges.
