T' avoid confusion with other cornth mittees, the long-distance panel of the Road Haulage Association, who have been considering taxation questions arising from the Transport Act, 1947, will be known in future as the balancing charges committee.

The membership of the committee has been revised and now consists of Messrs. H. L. Walker (Northern Area), chairman; D. Tarren (Northern); M. Hancock (Yorkshire, Sheffield); J. Hescroff (Southern); Alan Cusick (North-western, Eastern); W. Allen (North-western, -Eastern); F. J. Short (Western); C. F. Russett (Western); A. J. Dale (West Midland); H. Hunter (Yorkshire, Hull); W. McCready (North-western, Western); R. S. Heaton (North-western, Western); J. 0. Barnard (Eastern): W. Bridge (Yorkshire, Leeds): W. E. Blatchford (Devon and Cornwall); F. B. Carter (Metropolitan and South-eastern); C. H. Matthews (Metropolitan and South-eastern) and J. W. Chapman (East Midland).

Mr. E. Lafford, the Association's chief accountant, is secretary.

At a meeting last Friday the committee reaffirmed a previous decision to select and support one or more cases before the Special Commissioners of the Inland Revenue, with a view to establishing the open-market value of vehicles at the relevant date.

According to previous decisions, the market value in some cases determines the amount of the balancing charges to be paid in respect of vehicles acquired by the British Transport Commission.

An appeal for funds to support the appeal is being made to all the operators and ex-operators concerned.

BIG DEMAND FOR G UNIT

It is understood that the distributors, Fuel Conservation, Ltd., 132-4 Fleet Street, London, E.C.4, are making arrangements for increased production, as well as speeding up the training of mechanics in the fitting of the device to the induction system.

COACH OWNERS LOSE APPEAL

ON appeal, the Minister of Transport has confirmed the refusal of the West Midland Traffic Commissioners to grant an extension of facilities to Blackheath Coaches (Birmingham), Ltd.

The appellants sought the addition of certain picking-up points on express services between Cradley Heath and Ilfracombe and Paignton. They also asked permission to operate at the August Bank Holiday week-end.. Costs were awarded against the company.
