The two-vehicle international licence held by Stephen Jackson, trading as Kerrys Freight, of Pontefract, was suspended indefinitely when he failed to appear at a Leeds disciplinary inquiry before North Eastern Deputy Traffic Commissioner Patrick Mulvenna.

Vehicle examiner Roger Page said he examined one vehicle and one trailer in May 1998 and found them to be satisfactory. The vehicle had additional large fuel tanks fitted to it.

Traffic examiner Timothy Shaw said that following a number of requests for the production of tachograph charts, records for one vehicle were produced, and Jackson wrote to say the other vehicle's charts had been produced by Cresta Freight Services of Wakefield. Cresta was the registered keeper of the two vehicles operated by Jackson. Information received from the police and Customs suggested the vehicles were possibly being operated at the wrong rate of tax and with concealed fuel tanks.

When he again asked for the production of tachograph records he was told Customs & Excise had them. He had been told by Customs that four vehicles were taxed at the private light goods rate.

An examination of the tachograph records revealed various breaches of the drivers' hours and tachograph rules, said Shaw. They also showed that one vehicle was regularly parked in Station Road, Darton, Barnsley, and that had led to complaints from local residents.

Suspending the licence, Mulvenna directed that Jackson should not be granted a further 0-licence or be employed as a transport manager until he attended another public inquiry.
