• The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Directorate at Swansea and the Vehicle Inspectorate in the Department of Transport have been identified as targets for possible "privatisation" under plans the Prime Minister has drawn up to increase civil service efficiency.
The Dip will soon begin discussions with the Treasury about the changes required. Once agreement is reached with the Treasury, the intention is that both these functions will be set up as agencies within the Dip with their staff continuing as civil servants. Trade unions will be consulted.
