Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Leyland Daf has introduced its range of 17-tonne two-axled rigid chassis in time for the change in gross weight limits, due in April.

Nine models will give a choice of gross power ratings from 104kW to 228kW and there will be body lengths from 3.23m to 8.94m — and 10.34m by special order. Designations now relate to gross power outputs. Plated axle weights for the freighter 17.14 municipal chassis have been increased to 7,000kg at the front and 10,500kg at the rear, improving load tolerance, which will be of particular help to refuse operators.

The Freighter 17.16 multipurpose chassis is powered by a turbocharged 411 engine rated at 119kW. The 17.16L will have an unladen weight of only 4,178kg and, claims Leyland Daf, the lowest chassis height of any vehicle in its class. It will be powered by a 119kW 300 Series (Cummins B-Series) engine which has a reputation for durability.

The Freighter 17.18 will be equipped with a turbocharged 420, giving a gross power output of 134kW. Already proven in Europe, the Leyland Daf 1900 DNS with a 6.61-tonne front axle is equipped with a turbocharged and charge cooled 6.2-litre engine driving through a six-speed gearbox.

The FA2100 DAT 17-tonner is designed for long-distance drawbar operations at 32.52 tonnes GTW with the option of a top sleeper cab to maximise load space.

Leyland Daf's Cruiser 17.23 — the most powerful of the Leyland-produced 4 x2 chassis — and the FA 2500 DHS are premium chassis at 17 tonnes with design GTWs of 32.52 and 40.5 tonnes respectively, but the top of the range is the 95-Series 17-tonne model with a 7.1-tonne front axle and a design GTW of 44 tonnes. All Leyland Daf models built to meet the next maximum weight limit are equipped with 295/80x22.5 'M' tubeless tyres on front and rear axles.

Last year the 16.26-tonne sector accounted for 18.8% of the total UK commercial vehicle market. Leyland Daf claimed 27% of that sector. Managing director Roger Phillips says: "We are confident that our broad product range will continue to dominate this highly-competitive middleweight sector of the market" Vehicles already ordered will be delivered from 1 April but deliveries of new orders are being quoted at about two months.
