Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A NEW window gear, suitable for Pldriver's cabs and for coach and bus windows, has recently been patented, and is to be marketed shortly, by Messrs. Copes Patent Windows, care of Marcel Products, 1-3, Brixton Road, London, S.W.9. The mechanism is shown in an accompanying illustration and it will be noted that it is of simple

• design.

The window is carried on a horizontal rectangular structure, on the lower beam of which are mounted two runners. These, in turn, have bearings, so that they may run on two steel rods, which are fixed in the frame -at the waist rail and diverge to their anchorages in the base plate.

Notches are provided at various positions on the rods and rollers, mounted on the runners, engage with these so that the window may be fixed in three or more positions between "

shut" and "fully open." Ten

sion is maintained by a coil spring carried between the two runners.

Fitting is simple, and we found a good-sized example of this window to have • a well-balanced action. The pressure required on the finger plate, at the top of the window, is light, and the engagement at various points appeared to be positive. When closing the window we found no undue pressure was necessary, the spring being so graded as to afford a nicely proportioned balance.

All the bearings are of gunmetal, so that no lubrication difficulties should appear. Moreover, in the event of the spring breaking, the position of the rods can' be altered—the base plate being adjustable—so that the window is locked in the " closed " position until such time as the spring is replaced.

In addition to this window, Messrs. Copas Patent Windows have developed a neat quadrant drop window for driver's cabs. Where it is desired to use a curVed door pillar, this type should prove of special value.
