The South-Eastern Commissioners Make Their Point Clear AF‘'`'.days ago Mr. Rowand Harker, chairman of the Traffic Commissioners for the South-Eastern Area, issued a warning against the impression, which he noticed existed amongst operators, that they could continue their services for which licences had been refused, pending the hearings of appeals against the Commissioners' decisions.

In regard to one applicant, he said that inasmuch as he was not operating his service last year, in spite of the fact that he made his application before March 31st, he was breaking the law by continuing to operate after a licence refusal pending announcements.

On Tuesday of last week Mr. Harker was asked for an explanation of his statement, which, it was said, caused some alarm amongst operators. Be then explained that paragraph 12 of the Transitory Order extended the benefits given by that Order, until the appeal had been disposed of, in cases where the applicant was entitled to the benefit of the Order but where the application had been refused. Provided that he was so entitled, the applicant could continue to operate until his appeal had been disposed of.

At a recent sitting the Commissioners for the South-Eastern Area declined•to grant a licence applied for by the East Grinstead Coaches to continue operation of a coach sersice between Felbridge and Brighton. The decision was made after a hearing which had been adjourned following a complaint with regard to alleged irregularities in the issuing of tickets.

The Commissioners stated, however, that there was need for a limited-stop service between East Grinstead and Brighton, and asked the Southdown Motor Services, Ltd., and the East Surrey Traction Co., Ltd., to lay applications before them in the next few days.

Following this a Southdown Sunday service between East Grinstead and Brighton was, last Wednesday, licensed by the Commissioners.
