for hours offences

by Pete Swingler A Nest Midlands haulier has blamed a string of hours convictions on increasing levels of traffic congestion preventing its drivers from taking adequate rest.

Dominic Green, prosecuting for the Vehicle inspectorate, told Solihull —agistrates court

that when a check was carried out on Solihull-based RIU UK some 321charts were examined but other charts were not produced, involving more than 1,600 missing kilometres.

The firm admitted six charges of permitting drivers to drive without sufficient rest and six counts of failing to produce tachograph charts; it was fined £1,200 with £85 costs.

Driver Clinton Woodburn was fined £150 with £70 costs after admitting three charges of taking insufficient rest. Another driver, Kevin Phillips, was fined £50 with £70 costs after admitting one similar charge.

Michael Carless, defending, said RIU was formed in 1999 and was a growing business with plans to double the size of its five-truck fleet.

He added: "The company has tightened its checks on drivers' hours but lorry drivers now find it difficult to reach rest sites in time for their required breaks because of increasing congestion and slow moving traffic."
