NEWS OF GREAT IMPORT • The Department of Trade and Industry is writing to organisations including the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and the Association of British Chambers of Commerce (ABCC) to see if further information should be made available about the names and addresses of importers of individual products into the United Kingdom.

This follows an announcement in the Budget debate on 19 March by Treasury Minister Peter Brooke, that representations had been made to ministers for further consideration to be given to the proposal. "Such a move would," said Brooke, "be consistent with the aim of facilitating the free flow of goods and information within the European internal market. The idea merits thorough examination, and officials will be consulting industry and commerce about such a move over the coming months".

The closing date for replies is the end of July.

Further information is available from the Customs and Excise Information Office, 21 Mincing Lane, London EC3, phone 01-626 1515 (ext 5469).
