MUCH MORE accommodation would be needed for lorry drivers from next January when the eight-hour driving day became law—provided we stayed in the Common Market. This was a point made by Mr Leslie Huckfield (Labour, Nuneaton) during a Commons discussion about refreshment and rest facilities available for drivers on motorways. Mr Huckfield asked whether the Transport Minister expected the British driver to have to sleep in his cab, as did the French and Germans.

He did not favour lorry drivers having to sleep in the cab, retorted Mr Mulley . after the referendum all these matters would have to be reviewed in the European context.
