• In the House of Commons Select Committee for the Transport (London) Bill this week the Tories were defeated—by nine votes to seven—when they tried to stop London Transport having power to acquire shares and securities in outside activities. The intention of 'their amendment, explained Mr. Michael Heseltine, was to prevent London Transport Executive being able to buy up private companies operating perfectly satisfactorily. Capt. Walter Elliott (Tory, Carshaiton) claimed that as the Bill stood the executive would have the disturbing power to buy up all its competitors.
Opposing the amendment, Mr. March said it would delete powers to allow the acquisition of undertakings where the assets were required by the Executive for the purpose of its business.
